Literacy Instruction Authorization Training
Training Overview
By gaining your Literacy Instruction Authorization (LIA), you successfully demonstrate your knowledge and competence in the field of adult basic education and family literacy. The LIA represents foundational knowledge in adult education and is issued by Educator Licensing at the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).
Colorado State University's School of Education is pleased to partner with CDE to offer three of the four courses you need to fulfill the LIA educational requirement.
Curriculum
A bachelor's degree in any subject is required to register for these certificate courses.
- EDAE 520 – Adult Education (3 cr.) (Fall)
Fulfills EDU 131 requirement - EDAE 620 – Processes and Methods (3 cr.) (Spring)
Fulfills EDU 132 requirement - EDAE 590 – Teaching English as a Second Language to Adult Learners (3 cr.) (Fall and Spring)
Fulfills EDU 134 requirement - EDU 133 – Adult Basic Education (3 cr.)
Offered online through Colorado Community Colleges Online.
These courses are also part of the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Education and Human Resource Studies degree. The credits completed as part of this training program can be applied toward the degree after formal admission per University transfer policies. However, successful completion of the courses does not guarantee admission to the degree program.
Certification
Admission to the University is not required to register for any course in the training program as long as you meet the course prerequisites.
Literacy Instruction Authorization certification is issued through Educator Licensing at the Colorado Department of Education. The LIA is obtained through documented evidence and demonstrated competency in foundational knowledge in the field of adult basic education and family literacy.
