1Review Admission Requirements

The Master of Applied Statistics (M.A.S.) requires applicants to have the following:

  • A four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited university
  • Three semesters of calculus (or at least through multiple integration)
  • A course in linear algebra
  • At least one undergraduate-level statistics course
  • Math Entrance Exam scores or GRE scores

Note that meeting the minimum department standards does not ensure admission to the program. Admission to Colorado State University graduate programs is based on a number of factors, including prior academic and professional experience and your personal statement.

The Master of Applied Statistics is a rigorous program that requires regular application of the skills learned in calculus, linear algebra, and statistics. If it has been more than 10 years since you have taken these math courses (or more than five years if these skills are not utilized on a regular basis in the workplace), please contact the department prior to applying.

2 Prepare Application Materials

Prepare the materials below and upload when you apply online.

  • Three letters of recommendation
Three professional recommendations are required. You will provide information about your recommenders in the online application. CSU will contact them with instructions and a link to a secure form they will submit on your behalf.

Letters should be from (1) previous or current college/university instructors, (2) previous or current, immediate professional supervisors, or (3) observers, other than supervisors, who can verify the specific impact of your professional or intellectual expertise. Letters from friends, co-workers, and/or relatives will be considered only as supplements to the required three letters.
  • Resume
  • Personal statement
Summarize your long-term professional and educational goals and how graduate studies will contribute to both in two pages or less.
  • Math Entrance Exam scores or GRE scores
It is highly recommended you complete the Math Entrance Exam, but GRE scores will also be accepted. The math entrance exam covers calculus and linear algebra, and applicants are provided free preparation materials by the department. To request preparation materials or to make arrangements to take the exam, please contact Karena Alons at There is no fee for taking this exam; however, the exam must be taken at an approved university testing center which may charge a fee for service. The exam will be available between January 15th and March 15th each year.
  • Transfer credit
If you have taken prior master's level coursework in statistics, those credits may be considered for transfer into our M.A.S. program if the grade earned was at least a B, and the course was of the appropriate type and level for our M.A.S. program. Any courses that have been taken to fulfill a requirement for another degree, even as an elective, cannot be allowed for transfer. You should send a catalog course description(s), textbook information, and a list of topics covered and course prerequisites.
