BIOM 573 - Structure and Function of Biomaterials

Prerequisite

MECH 331 (Introduction to Engineering Materials). Credit not allowed for both BIOM 573 and MECH 573.

Description

Structure-function relationships of natural biomaterials; application to analysis of biomimetic materials and biomaterials used in medical devices.

Dr. Susan P. James is Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering, and a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Colorado State University. Professor James' research focuses on polymeric materials used in biomedical engineering. These include joint replacement applications as well as regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Much of her current work is on polyethylene and/or hyaluronan-based biomaterials.

She also has a collaborative project with cardiac surgeons on the development of a cardiac device for the treatment of cardiomyopathy and mitral valve regurgitation. Her most recent projects are focused on bone healing putties, osseointegrative coatings with particular application to cancer treatment.
