World War II commands popular attention like no other subject in history. An outpouring of movies and books began almost before veterans returned from the war zones and continues unabated today. For more than seventy years, images created by popular media have shaped how public audiences think about and remember this signal event. It is now more than seventy years since the guns were silenced, and this course will present an opportunity to recalibrate our view of World War II as it was fought in Europe with new perspectives and fresh understandings based on recent historical research.
