Duke Ellington is among the most significant figures in the history and development of America's great and unique art form - jazz. His early life and career overlaps with the development of jazz in its small group dynamics in New Orleans and Chicago, to its rising popularity and influence during the Swing Era in New York.

This presentation will include biographical information on Duke's early days and his emergence as a bandleader first in Washington and then in New York, and will also include many musical examples from his early recordings
