After the Civil War a number of ex-Confederate officers, faced by the utter devastation of the South, wrote their memoirs depicting the war as a noble, heroic but sadly hopeless 'Lost Cause.' The story is part myth and part truth and it is widely accepted today. This talk will be a critique of this viewpoint that will highlight its exaggerations and the one major contradiction that it contains.
