This lecture will begin by discussing the archaeological evidence of one of the world's oldest instruments, the xylophone. The discussion will venture to the development of the xylophone in Europe including its use as the "straw fiddle" and its early appearances in symphonic literature. A large amount of the discussion will focus on the "golden age of the xylophone" as a pop instrument in the 1930's. Several of its stars - George Hamilton Green as well as its present day champion "Bob Becker" will be present in the conversation. Participants are sure to enjoy this interesting discussion and demonstration of this ancient instrument.
