Though it may be hard to believe, television as a form of popular culture did not come into its own until the late 1940s/early 1950s. Given that brief history, it may be still harder to believe that reality television has existed as long as television has been on the air. Early television game shows, variety shows, and talk shows formed the basis for what we now think of as modern reality television.
This talk will trace the history of reality television programming and explore why it remains such an enduring and profitable television genre.
