Five mountain peaks in the Sawatch Range are collectively known as the "Collegiate Peaks" because each bears the name of a famous university, and six mountain peaks in the Front Range are collectively known as the "Indian Peaks" because each bears the name of an Indian tribe.
Following these precedents, collectively calling the six mountain peaks named for nineteenth century botanists the "Botany Peaks" only makes sense. In an era of cut-every-tree lumbering and gut-the-ground-and-run mining, these botanists made enormous contributions to America in terms that cannot be calculated in tonnage or board feet.
This course will detail these botanists, explain motivations for naming mountains after them, locate each peak, and describe how best to see them all.
