Russian film art provides a fascinating portrayal of its culture’s values and beliefs beginning at its inception and following development up to the present. This class observes works of major Russian film directors in their social, political, historical, and cultural aspect.
The major topic of this course will be 20th and 21st century Russian culture as it is reflected in the art of cinema. Special attention will be paid not only to the historical periods but also to the cultural trends, the connection between the culture and officialdom, the peculiarities of national self-perceptions, and the artistic realities in Russian film.
