Hymns have proven to be one of the most enduring, widespread, and beloved types of music, sung by congregations in all parts of the world for over 1000 years.
This course will examine the first hymns of Western Europe, the appearance of hymns in medieval manuscripts during the time of Charlemagne’s educational reforms, Luther’s transformation and composition of hymns in service to his Reformation, and the proliferation of hymns in the New World, including the assimilation of songs of slaves and immigrants.
The course’s final session will be shaped by course participants. Bring your favorite hymn and we’ll trace its history from its inception to its presence in Fort Collins in 2016.
Noncredit courses do not produce academic credit nor appear on a Colorado State University academic transcript.
