Although commonly thought of as a new form of television, reality television programs have existed as long as television has aired. Shows that featured everyday people in somewhat unpredictable circumstances and scenarios fall squarely into the reality genre. These shows are both immensely popular and incredibly profitable.
This course will examine the social and cultural messages found in reality television programs including 1950s game shows and talk shows, early reality dramas such as PBS’s An American Family, as well as more current reality shows like American Idol, Intervention, and Survivor.
Noncredit courses do not produce academic credit nor appear on a Colorado State University academic transcript.
