This course is offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Colorado State University. You must be a member of Osher to enroll in this course.

The thoughts of three 19th Century political theorists provide the basis for a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of politics in our lifetime.

John Stuart Mill offers insights into the philosophical core of the contemporary political center (Liberalism) as does Karl Marx for the contemporary political left (Communism) and Frederick Nietzsche for the contemporary political right (Fascism and Conservatism).

This course will tie their key concepts and paths of analysis to structures and choices that mark practical political life since World War I. Familiarity with the theoretical works of Mill, Marx, or Nietzsche is not presumed. The purpose of the course is to make these theorists accessible and understandable as they contribute to clearer insights about the political world in which we have lived and continue to live.
