BUS 690C - Contemporary Issues - Info Systems: Data Visualization and Manipulation

  • 3 credits
  • Online

Data visualization has historically been accessible only to the elite in academia, business, and government. It was "serious" technology, created by experts for experts. In recent years, however, visualizations -- ranging from political art projects to news stories -- have reached audiences of millions.

The increasing amounts of data that we are exposed to are creating a significant increase in cognitive load. Visualization systems and techniques are intended to aid in dealing with this deluge, serving as external cognition “amplifiers” that expand memory, ease comprehension, and support decision making. There are different uses of the term “information visualization” in different communities. For the purposes of this class, we will treat information visualization as the use of interactive interfaces to visually represent both abstract, small/complex and “big” data.

Students will develop the skills necessary to solve visualization problems as well as critique and evaluate current visualization systems. This material will be covered through lectures, readings, and a number of assignments and projects. The assignments will provide students with practical experience in the construction of visualizations and use of current systems. The course will include some programming work. Students should be comfortable with a basic level of programming and data and be willing to work with and learn graphics APIs and analysis tools.

CIS 655 or previous database experience or coursework strongly recommended.
