About Us
Organization
The Society of Senior Scholars is an open organization comprised of all retired faculty of Colorado State University. It is led by a President and a Vice President who serve two year terms. An Executive Committee, chaired by the President, is active in formulating all Society procedures and policies and advising the officers on Society administrative matters. The Society is organized as a "Special Unit" under Section B.2.6 (University Centers, Institutes and Other Special Units) of the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual. The Society is one of the few special units that report to the Provost.
In 2010, the Society adopted a new and substantially revised set of By-Laws which formalized leadership roles and responsibilities and established an improved Mission Statement that is compatible with similar organizations around the country.
Colorado State University is an institutional member of the national Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE).
Programs of the Society of Senior Scholars
The Society of Senior Scholars offers several programs designed to enhance the quality of life for retirees. In addition, we support links and opportunities for those who wish to remain actively involved in the three core missions of CSU, research, teaching or service. One of the Society's offerings of special interest is a range of resources to assist CSU employees who are nearing retirement with the process. All programs of the Society are open to the public.
Speaker Series
The Society of Senior Scholars (SSS) joins with the Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning (Osher) to sponsor four distinguished speakers each semester. These programs present current leading edge information of either scientific or artistic content.

Excursion Series
An Excursion Series is offered once or twice a semester and possibly once in the summer. The intent here is to provide a chance to get out of town, stretch our legs, see something of the local culture, history, or natural resources of particular importance. Check the News and Events page for Excursion Series announcements.
Retirement Resources
SSS provides several resources for those considering retirement in the next few years. We have developed a publication, "Retiring from CSU? A Guide for Faculty of Things to Think About". Furthermore, we endeavor to mount a Retirement Planning Seminar each year during the university's Professional Development Institute. Prof. Manfred Diehl's excellent Life Planning for Optimal Aging presentation which was delivered at the 2010 seminar is also available. Download the presentation (ppt).
The Society offers an annual retirement planning seminar to the university community. Topics normally covered include:
- Lifestyle planning
- Estate planning
- Financial planning
Community Building
The Society's collaborative relationship with Osher serves to expand the range of programs and personal contacts available. In additions, the Society informs members of selected campus and community events and opportunities to participate in classes, seminars, field trips, and other activities of interest to active seniors.
