Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous coursework or experience for this degree?
This program is designed for students who have completed at least 60 transferrable credit hours at the community college or university level or have completed an A.A. or A.S. degree. Your previous transcripts will be evaluated to determine your academic status in relation to satisfying degree program requirements.

How long will it take me to finish the degree?
The amount of time it will take you to complete the degree depends on how many credits you choose to take each semester. Courses are offered in fall, spring, and summer to offer flexibility to students. Students commonly take two to three courses each semester.

With this degree can I be licensed as a teacher in public education?
The HDFS online program does not prepare you to take the teacher's licensing exam in Colorado, although it will provide most of the necessary coursework. To become licensed, you can complete a post-degree licensure program at a number of different universities, or, if you have teaching experience, you may qualify for alternative licensure. How much time will I need to dedicate weekly to my studies?
The amount of time you will spend weekly will depend on the amount of coursework you commit to each semester as well as your learning and studying style. It is recommended to spend at least nine to twelve hours per week on a three credit course.

Will there be interaction with other students and faculty?
You will collaborate on projects and exchange ideas with fellow classmates through email and discussion board postings. Your interactions with faculty depend on the specific course, but online courses provide online office hours and email contact as well as discussion board postings.

What do I need to take courses for the HDFS degree?

Time frame

The program duration will vary based on your learning style, intensity of study, previous coursework, and career objectives. Summer courses are not required although most courses are available during summer.

What you will earn

You will earn the same regionally-accredited Colorado State University degree that a student on the Fort Collins campus is awarded. Your diploma and transcript are identical to those awarded to on-campus students.
