Biomedical Engineering

Master of Engineering (M.E.) – Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering Specialization

How to Apply

Before applying to the degree program, it is strongly recommended that you contact the program coordinator well in advance of the application deadline to understand and fulfill all requirements.

Minimum Admission Requirements

Successful applicants to the program typically have:

  • B.S. in engineering, life sciences, or natural sciences from a regionally-accredited institution
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher in engineering or life science courses
  • Calculus 1, 2, and 3
  • Ordinary Differential Equations
  • Physics 1 and 2 (calculus-based preferred)
  • At least one semester of Life Science (biology, physiology, etc.)
  • Strong GRE scores (although there are not absolute minimum scores required, the department looks for an 1100 combined score on the quantitative and verbal sections, and a 4.5 on the analytical section)

Note that meeting the minimum department standards does not ensure admission to the program. Admission to Colorado State University graduate programs is based on a number of factors, including prior academic and professional experience and the personal statement.

Before your application for graduate study is considered, all application materials must be received by the department.

Step 1 – Apply Online

  • Complete the online graduate application form and pay the $50 application fee (payable online with a major credit card).
    • Select "Engineering (Biomedical Engineering - School of Biomedical Engr) ME-Distance" when choosing the Program of Study.

Step 2 – Submit Application Materials

Gather all of the following materials and submit to the School of Biomedical Engineering:

  • Professional Resume or Vita
You may include this in the online application process, email it as an attachment to sara.neys@colostate.edu, or submit a paper copy.
  • Statement of Purpose
The statement of purpose is typically 1-2 pages and briefly describes your background, educational goals, research interests, and why you would be a good fit in the program. You may include this in the online application process, email it as an attachment to sara.neys@colostate.edu, or submit a paper copy.
  • Official Transcript
Include one official transcript of all collegiate work completed from every institution attended, whether or not you received a degree from those institutions. Transcripts from Colorado State University are not required. Transcripts must be submitted in a sealed university envelope.
  • GRE Test Scores (if necessary)
Submit official GRE General Test scores through the Educational Testing Service (select institution code: 4075, leave the department code blank). Scores are typically received by the University 4-6 weeks after your testing date.
    • All three sections - verbal, quantitative, and analytical – must be submitted. Photocopies are not accepted.
    • CSU graduates do not, generally, need to take the GRE. If you think it will strengthen your application, though, we recommend you do take it.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
It is recommended that letters come from faculty, supervisors, or others who can accurately speak to your skills as an engineer, scientist, researcher, and student. Important: Letters may be mailed or emailed as an attachment to sara.neys@colostate.edu, but must come directly from the recommender.

International Applicants Only

Include the following items in addition to those listed above:

  • Official Transcript
Ensure official copies include a certified translation into English (only one set of transcripts is required).
  • Official TOEFL Scores
Submit official TOEFL scores through the Educational Testing Service (select institution code: 4075). In general, all applicants from countries in which English is not the official language, and who do not have an undergraduate degree from a country in which the official language is English (Canada, U.K., Australia, USA, New Zealand, etc.) must submit TOEFL scores. The minimum score for applicants is 550 (100 on the computer-based test).
  • Proof of Financial Support
Proof of financial support is not required for admission. Please realize that, as a distance degree, students are not taking classes on campus, and no immigration documents will be issued.

Sending Application Materials

Any materials that cannot be submitted online should be sent to the School of Biomedical Engineering address below. Please send all your materials to the School of Biomedical Engineering and they will forward materials appropriately:
