We have created a way for you to learn about sustainable building tools and strategies, including LEED, a registered trademark and the nationwide rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. Our certificate program is geared toward working professionals, providing an accelerated evening program with the critical knowledge you need to respond to emerging trends in commercial and residential building.

This Green Building Certificate is offered by the Institute for the Built Environment and has been developed in response to a growing need for specially trained professionals able to respond to a changing industry and culture.

Our twelve-week certificate program provides a comprehensive overview of the following construction topics:

Colorado State University faculty and regionally recognized guest speakers bring breadth and depth of professional experience to the classroom. Colorado State University is a national leader in providing construction management education.

Noncredit courses do not produce academic credit nor appear on a Colorado State University academic transcript.

Instructors

Josie Plaut, LEED AP, Director of Projects for the Institute for the Built Environment at Colorado State University, coordinates green building projects and offers working knowledge in LEED compliant design. She has a degree in Business and Sustainability from Fort Lewis College and a Masters of Construction Management with an emphasis in Sustainable Building at Colorado State University.

Plaut has worked in the private, non-profit and government sectors to facilitate and coordinate green building projects and is an experienced instructor, lecturer and workshop facilitator. Josie is LEED v2.0 and v2.2 Accredited Professional with working knowledge in LEED compliant design, construction, and documentation. Plaut’s research interests include organizational change and processes as they relate to the adoption of sustainability and integrated design.

The curriculum for this course has been developed by Nancy E. Clanton. Nancy is founder and President of Clanton & Associates, a lighting design firm specializing in sustainable design. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree (Architectural Engineering, Illumination Emphasis) from the University of Colorado, Boulder and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Colorado and Oregon. Nancy is chairperson of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Outdoor Environmental Lighting Committee, Mesopic Committee and Model Lighting Ordinance Task Force, is a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the IESNA board of directors. Nancy is currently on the USGBC LEED Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group. Nancy was a topic editor for the IESNA Lighting Handbook and her committee was responsible for the production of the IESNA Recommended Practice on Lighting for the Exterior Environment.

Brennan Schumacher, LEED Accredited Professional, is owner and founder of Be Green Consulting. He brings a wealth of practical electrical design and green building experience to his clients' projects. A graduate of Dunwoody Institute's Electrical Design and Construction Management program, Schumacher has served as primary lead designer for multi-million dollar projects for clients such as the New Belgium Brewing Company and the City of Fort Collins.

A Colorado native, Cody is a business graduate of the University of Northern Colorado’s Monfort College of Business, and is currently set to graduate with a Master’s of Science in Construction Management, Sustainable Building at Colorado State University in December 2010. His research focuses on Economic Development and Recovery Money in the Residential Green Marketplace. Cody joined IBE to coordinate the development and implementation of online green building courses.

Cody is also the Vice President of MainStream Corporation, a Passive House design, construction management, and consulting company focused on energy efficient real estate improvements/new-builds and true green building practices. He has sat on boards and contributed to many non-profits organizations that focus on economic development such as Colorado’s $15 million dollar WIRED Grant award, Northern Colorado’s Business Assistance Consortium, Milliken Business Association, and currently the Northern Colorado Green Building Education Consortium.

Brian Dunbar is the lead instructor of the Green Building Certificate Program. He is the Director of the CSU Institute for the Built Environment (IBE), coordinating the graduate emphasis in Sustainable Building and researching healthy, sustainable buildings. Brian is a LEED-NC and LEED-CI Accredited Professional and is a national faculty member with U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Dunbar, who is also a professor in the Department of Construction Management, was recently recognized as a Hero of Sustainability by the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado.
