CON 136 - Computer-Aided Design
3 credits
Delivery/Location: Online
Prerequisite
BUS 150 (Business Computing Concepts and Applications).
Description
This course serves all disciplines that require methods of visualization and drafting. Students gain hands-on experience with the world's most widely used computer-aided design (CAD) software. They gain valuable insights about how computer-aided design is applied in industry, using specific examples from a variety of disciplines.
Students learn to:
- Understand the importance of graphic communications to industry.
- Understand geometric construction and drafting techniques including an ability to construct geometric objects.
- Demonstrate an awareness of CAD applications and their competitive advantage to industry.
- Understand CAD hardware and software.
- Create CAD drawings according to various industry standards; scale, print and/or plot CAD drawings.
- Understand basic dimensioning techniques and apply them using AutoCAD.
- Understand basic document control techniques and apply them using AutoCAD.
- Understand the need for auxiliary views and create such views using AutoCAD.
- Understand the importance of 3-D solid modeling related to a variety of industries.
- Use CAD to create basic 3-D solid models.
The course goes above and beyond the basic teaching of AutoCAD; students teach themselves how to "learn" AutoCAD, enabling them to find answers on their own so they continue to absorb AutoCAD features after completing the course.
Course topics include 3-D CAD basics, visualization techniques, and new features of AutoCAD 2006. Students and professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction, and design (landscape, apparel, interior) are the target audience for the course. Anyone with a personal interest in Autocad is also encouraged to enroll.
